People view the music industry as a very glamorous and profitable one. Bands, singers and rappers always get a great deal of money and credit for their work while much of the effort actually comes from other people too. More recently producers have started to receive more recognition and fame but they are often named to help the performance of new artists after they have worked with much bigger artists. It is the sound engineers however who are the unsung heroes as their contribution is vital.
Over the years there have been a number of sound engineers who have done great things for the music industry and played a significant part in its development. Owsley Stanley is one of these people and his work has influenced the setup of almost every live performance since. Working for the Greatful Dead, Stanley developed and created a sound system to be used at major live performances. The huge setup eliminated the distortion heard in previous performances and became known as the Wall of Sound.
Then there is Eddie Kramer who has worked with some of the biggest and most important bands and artists in the history of music. As well as recording all of Kiss' live performances, Kramer engineered numerous albums for Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles and many others. Eddie Kramer was also hired to carry out the live recording of Woodstock which is one of the world's biggest music festivals. Over the three days he recorded the sound front the album and the film which featured the likes of David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, Kiss and many others.
George Martin and his son Giles have both produced and engineered albums for numerous artists including George's work with The Beatles when they were at their peak. Giles worked with huge artists like the great Elvis Costello but he has also worked with more recent singers like Celine Dion.
There is also Rudy Van Gelder who a lot of people have stated is the greatest ever audio engineer. Van Gelder became famous for his work with many jazz artists including John Coltrane and Miles Davis. He is also responsible for the engineering of some of the most famous pieces of jazz music in existence.
