The Bible tells us how the earth came to being and that God is beyond human understanding. A Christian by the name Richard Overton was known for his knowledge and understanding f the Bible. He preached to people the word of God and asked them to follow the teachings of Christ in order to have everlasting life.
Later on, the activist became a member of the General Baptism Church and decided to follow the teachings of that faith. The general Baptist church argued that when a human being dies, it is only the body and human soul which are subjected to extinction. Death is a natural phenomenon that everyone must go through it and therefore we should not fear death.
The general church further preached that all those who died will resurrect when Christ returns the second time. Other churches contradicted with what Richard was telling people through the pamphlets he distributed. The activist studied how the rivaling churches went about church activities and he was very disturbed.
In his pamphlets, he said that in order to be blessed by God, people ought to do what is right. Other churches ignored tithe and offerings. When they offered, the money was diverted to other uses like paying the state officials which was supposed quite unethical. There was a mixed reaction on the comments of Overton by the community. This was not long before he was arrested and jailed.
The arguments of the pamphleteer were laid against him and he was harassed by the community. This was religious rivalry. They wanted him jailed and fined for not respecting religions of other people. He tried defending himself but the case was too heavy for him and he was arrested and jailed.
Many things occurred while he was in prison. People got the freedom to exercise their Christian life the way they wanted. Richard relied on prayers while in prison although it was not easy for him. He encouraged fellow inmates about Christ and a good number were saved. He condemned the government for being corrupt and oppressing the nation.
Prison life taught him many lessons which he recalled always. When he finally came out of prison, he and his friends attended a meeting where officials were addressing the nation on matters of the constitution and the nation. Overton stood up and rejected the provisions of the leaders. Commotion was all over and the meeting ended.
Once out of that place, Richard Overton went ahead to write another book that addressed political corruption and matters relating to oppressive leadership. He did this with the help of like-minded friends. The release of that pamphlet caused the team to be summoned to appear before the council meeting for questioning. When they were asked if they took part in writing that book, they denied and were jailed for the same. Overton and his friends remained in jail awaiting trial. They were released later and went to England to publish a revised version. Whatever transpired with his life thereafter remains a mystery.
