The word sometimes alternatively spelled and pronounced as lollapalootza or lalapaloosa, or "lallapaloosa" what it means is "Heart of a Goof" and dates from a late 19th or early 20th century. It is an American idiomatic phrase that means "an extraordinary or unusual thing, person, or event; an exceptional example or instance.". In time the term also came to refer to a large lollipop. Farrell, searching for a name for his festival, liked the out of the ordinary term and adopted it after hearing it first in a Three Stooges short film.

The next year, in 2004, the festival organizers decided to expand the dates to two days per location, but they quickly realized this model to be a failure and were forced to cancel the tour in 2004.Not wanting to lose it's renewed momentum, Farrell and the William Morris Agency joined forces with a company formerly known as Capital Sports Entertainment, and repackaged Lollapalooza into its prevailing format as a weekend out with the family festival in Chicago, Illinois.
Lollapalooza organizers declared in 2010 that they would debut the festival overseas. The First of such expanded cities would be Chile's capital Santiago, and the event was to be held in April of 2011. The following year, 'Lolla' coordinators publicized the Brazilian flavor of the event, which was to take place at the Jockey Club in the city of Sao Paulo in April of 2012.

Lollapalooza has featured a diverse slew of bands and has helped expose and popularize artists such as Beastie Boys, Coldplay, Depeche Mode, Deadmau5, Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam, The Cure, Primus, The Killers, Rage Against the Machine,Stone Temple Pilots, X Japan, Audioslave, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Arcade Fire, Nine Inch Nails, Jane's Addiction, The Smashing Pumpkins, Muse, Alice in Chains, Bjrk, MGMT, Foster the People, Tool, Hole, Body Count, Ice-T,Calvin Harris, Thenewno2, Fishbone, Butthole Surfers, Queens of the Stone Age, The Drums, The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys, and last but not least Lady Gaga.
